The grain mill shown left,
the "Malt Mill", is manufactured by Jack
Schmidling Products. The purpose of the grain mill is to
crack the grain's husk or shell. This allows the starches
contained within the grain to be more readily converted to fermentable sugars during the mashing process.
As shown in the photo left, the mill fits snugly on top
of a standard 6-7 gallon plastic bucket for collection of the
crushed grain. Top views of the mill are shown on the right. The
bottom right photo shows grain entering between the mill's
rollers. The JSP Malt Mill is very well made and
is highly recommended by Lee's Home Brewery. The mill's handle can also be removed and fitted with an
electric hand drill for motorized operation as shown in the photo
below.
